Already: a mid-summer poem

The tiger lilies are almost done blooming
Bright orange faces turning to the sun
Their left-over stalks turning into brown sticks

The raspberry bushes have given up their juicy fruit
A few lonely red berries remain
New green shoots promise next year’s crop

An orange-red leaf from an off-schedule tree appears in the yard
Doesn’t she know leaves are supposed to be green in summer?

Even though it is only mid-summer
A hint of fall is already in the air

A twinge of sadness.
